Boys, have you ever felt like this?
As he left the bar with Christine at his side, Dixon felt like a special agent, a picaroon, a Chicago war lord, a hidalgo, an oil baron, a Mohock. — Lucky Jim

How to tell when you're losing your youth*
As one grows older one becomes more silent. In one’s youth one is ready to pour oneself out to the world; one feels an intense fellowship with other people, one wants to throw oneself in their arms and one feels that they will receive one. (42)

The month of Maugham
Six months ago, a friend gave me W.S. Maugham’s A Writer’s Notebook. It was not meant for me, actually, but through an accident, I ended up as the happy recipient. It’s an old copy (1991) and its yellow pages been thumbed through quite thoroughly. I picked it up last month and almost immediately, couldn’t stop re-reading certain passages. For all its misogyny and...

LA, LA
My first 6 days in LA have been perfect. Every minute I feel so happy and incredibly lucky. Like this morning when I ordered a cup of damn good coffee at Intelligentsia (no Americano crap), snagged the best seat in the patio, read today’s LA Times, people-watched, played with dogs, and chatted with their owners.
I forgot how beautiful people are in Los Angeles. Really good and different...

Still makes me cringe to hear someone call me a “foodie” or watch myself on camera, but loved my experience too much not to share. You’ll see the staff at simplethings and know why everything there looks and tastes so good. And yes, I ate the entire sandwich (another great stop on the LA tour) and stand by the fact that the caramel was an excellent surprise.

Why is it easier to wake up early in the...
With no alarm, I woke up at 6 am and took a little jaunt down the road before breakfast. So early that flowers were still displaying their dew drops.
Later, we went out for a proper hike. This little walkway looks so inviting, doesn’t it? Unbelievably, I got stuck trying to turn back around and stood petrified while my aunt laughed hysterically. She told me that the locals can...

My playground
This is a view of one of my workstations, that little bench and table. The view in reverse. Depending on the time of day, I’d move to the other side of the house and set up shop there with a cool glass of iced tea and obligatory sunglasses. Sometimes I’d take reading back to my big stone. And once, I didn’t feel like going out, so I hijacked the desk in my cousin’s room...

Gyeongju retreat
My aunt and uncle built a gorgeous home in the Gyeongju countryside last year after my uncle had a stroke and decided to take it easy. He didn’t want to be too far from his home city, Ulsan, so they picked a lovely spot 40 minutes away. I had been meaning to visit them again all summer, but finally made it down there last week when I was fed up with my lack of productivity in Seoul. There...

Volunteer opportunities
Just passing it along for anyone interested:
Dear PSCORE friends,
We are looking for staffs to have a campaign at the Pusan film festival. We are promoting awareness of North Korean human rights issues. The main focus will be on North Korea’s concentration camps. Staff will manage 50 campaign boards and explain those specific issues related to the boards, as well as other PSCORE...

Hey! It’s right next to Sogang University. Line 6, Daehung, Exit 1, then it should be up ahead to your right. Whereabouts are you?
